National Nonprofit Day

National Nonprofit Day is celebrated annually on August 17th.  What is National Nonprofit day anyway?  Sherita J. Herring, a renowned speaker, best-selling author and business strategist, founded National Nonprofit Day to educate, enlighten and empower others to make a difference, while acknowledging those that are in the trenches, impacting lives every day.

“National Nonprofit Day allows us the opportunity to take a moment to recognize the positive impact that charitable organizations make on our society”.

What does this mean to you?  This means it’s an opportunity to research what you are passionate about and how you can make a difference by doing something to help a related nonprofit – if only for this one day.  It might spark a bigger passion and get you involved in a deeper way or even start your own nonprofit.  What?  Start your own nonprofit?  Where do you even start?  Start with what you love and know is a need.  Animals?  People?  The ocean?  Sea turtles?  The possibilities are endless!  You will notice every nonprofit promoting their needs leading up to and on National Nonprofit Day.

In 2013 I was burned out volunteering for nonprofits in my area.  I took a break and realized I NEEDED to help others, not animals or the environment (I know those need help too), I needed to help PEOPLE.  In particular – breast cancer patients & their families.

Friends – I have the most amazingly supportive husband.  While on my break from volunteering I told my main squeeze I was bored and needed to do something to help others.  I thought for sure I’d get the answer of “find a charity to help” answer, but instead he said “start your own charity“.  Did you read that??  This was HIS suggestion!  So I did it!!  I started my own charity.

Fore Her, Inc. was born in June of 2013.  Fore Her raises funds for breast cancer patients currently undergoing treatment and are in financial need.  We help pay for utilities, rent/mortgage, auto payments/repairs (sometimes more depending on what the need is).  It has been a true blessing to be able to help families in Northwest Florida have some financial relief while going through treatment.  My passion came from wanting to honor my Mom and my Aunt who both passed away from breast cancer.  National Nonprofit Day is a day I celebrate with pride.

Did you know there are over 500 nonprofits in Walton County Florida?  In Okaloosa County Florida there are over 1300.  YOU can make a small difference even for one day of volunteering or sending one $5 donation to any charity.  Seriously!  Every dollar counts.

Now, what are you going to do to celebrate National Nonprofit Day??  I triple dog dare you to make a difference!
