Traditional School 2020

In this year of uncertainty my kids going back to school was something I was looking forward to. We picked traditional school for our family. Not to get rid of them and out of the house- just to provide them some kind of normalcy and kid interaction.

When my husband and I sat down to talk about what our decision was going to be between virtual, traditional, or a little bit of both, we didn’t hesitate to send them to back to traditional school.

Our decision was made almost immediately. With absolute great respect to those who chose virtual schooling (and to be clear, I do not think one is better than the other by any means), traditional school was just the best fit for us. I have friends that kept their kids home and even my little sister who is in 7th grade this year is doing half virtual and half traditional.

Our reasons for our personal family decision were as follows:

1) When Covid hit and school transferred to home learning, my oldest daughter struggled a lot. It wasn’t because I didn’t teach her or sit with her on her lessons. She did great at first and then slowly lost interest and stopped caring about her work. She loved school and would wake up early and ready to go each morning. She is very studious. She simply just wasn’t as stimulated.

2) She missed student-to-student interaction and group activities. She loved her teachers, going to lunch, and playing on the playground with her friends. She loved being around people.

3) As her effort toward her school work changed, I saw her start to get depressed. So sending her back to school when things reopened was a no brainier for my husband and me.

4) As for my middle child Rylee (our brand new kindergartner) who was so excited to be a “big kid” and start school for the first time other than preschool; well if you don’t know my kids, let’s just say I couldn’t send one and not the other.

Through this whole process we’ve been respectful of the rules and I do send masks with the girls. Our routine after school is hand sanitizer applied immediately after getting picked up from car line, shoes and backpacks off AT THE DOOR, along with immediately washing hands and showers for the night before homework and dinner. Before school started I bought both of my girls adorable clear plastic backpacks that I disinfect DAILY inside and out, along with their lunch boxes of course.

Now that school has been in session for around a month, I’ve felt very confident and reassured in our choice of traditional school.

Not only has the school staff and teachers been amazing in the process and transition back to school, the students walking the halls are full of energy and positive vibes. My kids are so happy to be back at school and have adapted beautifully. With big hope that things continue to look bright, I don’t second guess our family’s choice of giving traditional school a shot!
