Week One of Our Spring Cleaning Challenge: Entrance/Drop Zone

0

Today, we officially kick off our spring cleaning challenge!! Each week, for the next four weeks, we will focus on one specific area of the house. This week we are focused on our entrance or drop zone. Tonya of Sorted 30A is helping us by breaking it down + giving us tips!

“Do your mornings run smoothly, or are you rushing around to find your keys and your toddler’s other shoe?  When you return home, do you feel calm or overwhelmed?

Walking into your home should bring about a feeling of calm and comfort, but clutter tends to gather at the entry.  What’s the first thing you see when you enter your house?

Shoes get kicked off, bags get dropped and forgotten, and mail piles up.

So let’s organize your “drop zone”  A designated place to drop all things when coming through the door.

Start by tossing the trash…junk mail that has piled up – trash, broken projects that you’ll never get around to – trash, and that thing you found on the floor a month ago and wasn’t sure what it went to – trash.

Now, decide if you need it.  Do you really need that free bag from a promotional giveaway?  What about that lovely, thoughtful gift that you know you’ll never use?  Don’t feel obligated to keep things that don’t serve a purpose in your life.  If you don’t have room for it or won’t use it, consider donating it.  Rather than taking up space in your house it could be a blessing for someone else.

Create a system that works for your family.  Does everyone drop their keys in a bowl near the door, or does each family member have their own drawer to keep their items separate?  Your family’s needs, as well as the set up of your home, will determine what system will work best for you.

Give everything a home.  If shoes pile up at the door, or get kicked off and lost around the house, put shoes on a shoe rack or in a basket so that everyone knows where their shoes go when they get home.

If backpacks and activities bags collect on the floor, add hooks for bags and jackets.  Now they’re all in one place to unpack and reload for the next day.  If you rush around searching for your keys each morning, add a bowl near the door to drop small items so that you always know where they are.

Work to keep clutter at bay.  Do a weekly refresh to remove trash, put away shoes and jackets that aren’t being used, and sort mail that needs attention.

When your drop zone is organized, not only do you feel relaxed coming home but your day will begin smoother.  No more searching for shoes or keys and rushed mornings to get to school.  Everything is ready to go.  So, enjoy an extra cup of coffee and cuddle from your little one as you start your day stress-free!”
