I was just trying to make these simple Easter egg maracas that can be found all over Pinterest. I actually make them every year for my kids with leftover Easter eggs, but this year, I tried to photograph the whole thing to make it Pinterest worthy. HA. What’s that saying?
You Make Plans and Pinterest Laughs.
Yep. Yep that’s it.
Sigh. I actually love this craft. The kids can make their own, they love them, and it’s great use for those last eggs still lying around the house that would otherwise be thrown away. The whole “make it Pinterest worthy” part is what has me going loca. But this post is happening because Cinco de Mayo is right round the corner and, even if it feels more like Cinco de I Quit Pinterest over here, There. Will. Be. Maracas.
Here’s what ya need to make these Easter Egg Maracas for Cinco De Mayo:
- Leftover Easter Eggs
- Plastic Spoons
- Filling–I used rice. But in years past I’ve used whatever I have around the house. Stale Cheerios? Sure. I almost resorted to walnuts this year, but thankfully found the rice in time. Uncooked beans or lentils work too; really anything goes here.
- Tape–I’m using washi tape, because, Pinterest. But you could use masking tape and decorate it yourself, painters tape, again, clearly I’m not that particular about my crafting.
Here’s what you do:
- Fill an egg with Rice (or whatever you’re using).
- Tape the egg to the plastic spoon.
- SHAKE.
- Repeat steps 1-3 (as your sanity allows).
Easy, right? Right! So Easy. Until you try to make it pretty for Pinterest. Spoiler alert: It’s right around Step 1 (if your kids are helping) and that pesky Step 2 where things start to go sideways. Here’s how it went down at our house.

Half way through, we had to move this party outside to escape our dog, who it turns out really likes washi tape. Yes, it would have been easier to just put the dog outside. Pinterest brain is a thing. Try not to judge.

The results? Well, currently someones’s crying about their washi tape pattern, there is rice everywhere, and I’m exhausted.
But when Cinco De Mayo rolls around, we’ll all be shaking maracas. So help me.
OMG this just made me laugh out loud. love this. I’m totally going to make these now just because its gonna make me remember your hilarious post and giggle some more. We all need a good giggle now and then!
